Couto toothpaste is not tested on animals and contains no animal-derived ingredients. It does not contain SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). Its formula is more concentrated than other toothpastes, so you need less on your brush.

The Medicinal Toothpaste Couto played an important role in changing oral hygiene habits in Portugal and was equally pioneering in investing – in the 1960s – in what was then called advertising, a sector now essential for promoting and raising the profile of a company.
From TV adverts to billboards and posters referencing the product, Medicinal Toothpaste Couto left its mark on 20th century Portuguese society.
It was the toothpaste everyone used.
The advertising image of a man spinning around with a chair stuck on his teeth – only possible thanks to Medicinal Toothpaste Couto – remains in the memory of all Portuguese people.


Couto Medicinal Toothpaste was created by Dr Alberto Ferreira Couto on 13 June 1932 in Porto, Portugal. The doctor, assisted by a dentist friend, developed a toothpaste to protect gums against recession. This natural product was so effective that in its home country, saying ‘Couto Paste’ is still synonymous with toothpaste.

Couto should be used with a quality toothbrush, brushing teeth and gum line so the toothpaste penetrates between the teeth. Leave the toothpaste in contact with the mucous membrane for one or two minutes before rinsing with water – this will maximise its effectiveness in reducing gum recession.
